Invenergy’s Center of Excellence: A Cutting-Edge Clean Energy Facility Built for Innovation

The Invenergy Center of Excellence, located in Bolingbrook, Illinois, represents a transformative step in the clean energy industry. Completed in 2024, this $30 million, 135,000-square-foot redevelopment serves as a warehouse, training center, corporate headquarters, and state-of-the-art control center for Invenergy, a global leader in clean energy solutions. As a national design-build general contractor, ARCO/Murray helped deliver a facility that enhances Invenergy’s operational efficiency, sustainability, and workforce training capabilities, setting a new standard for clean energy infrastructure.

A Vision for Sustainability and Efficiency

The Invenergy Center of Excellence showcases Invenergy’s dedication to sustainability, innovation, and efficiency. By housing key operations under one roof, the facility streamlines processes and strengthens their leadership in clean energy.

Invenergy Training Center

This two-story, multi-functional building includes:

Warehouse: Designed for the maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of wind turbines and blades from across the United States. The retrofitted space includes two large indoor gantry cranes, a specialized paint booth, and welding setups, enabling Invenergy to handle these critical operations in-house, reducing the use of third-party vendors.

Training Spaces: Equipped with hands-on training labs and classrooms, these spaces provide important education for field technicians who will operate, maintain, and repair wind turbines in the field. A standout feature is the advanced fall prevention training platform, which simulates the experience of working on turbines that reach 100+ meters in height.

Corporate Offices: These modern, collaborative workspaces cater to Invenergy’s administrative and executive teams. The offices are equipped with cutting-edge audio/visual technologies to boost communication and innovation throughout.

Generation Control Center: Meeting the strict standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP), the control center allows for real-time monitoring of Invenergy’s wind farms across the nation. With a 30-monitor display wall and custom workstations featuring seven monitors each, the center optimizes the delivery of clean energy to the U.S. power grid. Redundant power and HVAC systems ensure continuous, reliable operation.

Delivering Energy-Efficient Construction That Supports Economic Growth

The Invenergy Center of Excellence not only supports the company’s clean energy goals but also benefits the local economy. By consolidating operations into one facility, Invenergy has increased operational efficiency, reduced vendor dependencies, and created job opportunities both during the construction phase and in ongoing operations. This project has contributed to local economic growth, providing much-needed jobs and training to the community.

Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant highlighted the impact, saying, “The Center of Excellence is a welcome investment, creating jobs and providing hands-on training to support a workforce of the future. This project will drive local innovation and progress, building upon Will County’s leadership in the clean energy economy.”

The facility transformed an underused site, improving its look and strengthening its role in clean energy development.

Navigating NERC CIP Compliance

One of the biggest challenges of this project was meeting the strict NERC CIP standards for the Generation Control Center, which ensures high security and reliable operation of the power grid. Despite these challenges, the project was completed on time and within budget, demonstrating careful coordination and expertise in navigating complex, regulated construction.

Building the Future of Clean Energy Infrastructure

Built to support Invenergy’s mission, the Center of Excellence streamlines operations, lowers costs, and improves service quality. As the clean energy industry expands, ARCO/Murray looks forward to continuing our partnership with Invenergy to help drive progress in clean energy.
