Finding My Place: My Journey as a Woman Interning at ARCO/Murray

Intern Jobsite Tour

INTERN BLOG BY BIANCA TRISTAN – During my sophomore year at Baylor University, I was introduced to ARCO/Murray’s Dallas team through a professional development class. Their impressive projects, company culture, and nationwide internship opportunities immediately caught my interest. As a mechanical engineering major, construction wasn’t on my radar, but my twelve weeks at ARCO were eye-opening. Here is what I learned:

Communication is KEY

Throughout the summer, I always felt comfortable asking questions or expressing concerns without feeling like a burden. Initially, I knew little about construction, but my curiosity drove me to seek help and learn. I learned to ask meaningful questions and tackle problems independently before seeking assistance. I discovered that asking questions, even those I thought might be silly, was not only acceptable but encouraged. This experience taught me how to effectively communicate with my team and embrace the learning process without fear of judgment.

Support Is Always Around You

When I started my internship, I knew nothing about construction, but the unwavering support around me kept me from feeling helpless. From day one, my mentor, Erika, guided me, offering help when needed, and also encouraging me to work independently. Even when she was out of town, other Project Managers stepped in to assist. It’s almost like they “adopted” me. I felt truly supported by the entire team, who made me feel like a valued member and always had my back.

Work CAN Be Fun

One of ARCO’s core values is to work hard and have fun, and I can confidently say I experienced both this summer. The people you work with can truly make or break your experience, and the team at ARCO made mine amazing. The interns in the Downers Grove and Chicago offices were incredibly personable, and our personalities meshed well. Not only were the other interns fun to be around, but so was everyone on my team. I eagerly looked forward to coming to work each day to hang out with my “adult friends.” The easy-going, youthful spirit of everyone at ARCO made the summer both enjoyable and rewarding.

You Truly Do Learn Something New Every Day

This summer, I had daily opportunities to learn about construction and project management—skills not covered in my classes. I mastered estimating projects from drawings and takeoffs, managed my time effectively, and improved my written and verbal communication. By asking meaningful questions, taking detailed notes, and staying curious, I gained a deep understanding of construction and feel much more knowledgeable now than when I started. I truly did learn something new every day.

Women in Construction Thrive at ARCO

As a woman in STEM, it can be intimidating to be in a field where we’re underrepresented. However, ARCO made me feel welcome and supported throughout my internship. My mentor and the female Project Managers were excellent role models, and the ARCO Boss Ladies Program—featuring global calls, lunches, and one-on-one mentorship—was particularly valuable. I felt supported by the women at ARCO and never felt out of place. Their dedication and drive were inspiring, and I hope to emulate their success. The level of mentorship at ARCO exceeded all my expectations.

Overall, my internship at ARCO/Murray has been a rewarding journey, broadening my horizons and reinforcing my interest in exploring unconventional paths within engineering.
